Photographic Competition on Poverty

Caritas Malta is organising a photographic competition under the patronage of the Malta Photographic Society on the occasion of the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. 

The competition, with the theme Stop Poverty Act Now (Ilqa’ l-Isfida:  Ġib il-Faqar fix-Xejn) is open to all residents in Malta and Gozo and closes on the 23rd September 2001.  Application forms and conditions of entry may be obtained from leading photography shops, Caritas Malta and the Malta Photographic Society.  The competition is being sponsored by Actavis.

The competition is to encourage photographers to bring hidden poverty in Malta to light. With the trained eye of the photographer poverty can be identified and recorded, and the resulting photographs used to help combat poverty.

Conditions of Entry

1. COMPETITION ELIGIBILITY. The Competition is open to all residents of Malta & Gozo. Members of the Organising Committee will be allowed to enter this competition on condition that they do not form part of the judging panel.

 2.  IMAGE OWNERSHIP. Participants must have full rights to the entries submitted and sign the Consent Form included with these conditions.

3.     IMAGE AUTHENTICITY. The original image must be made by the participant on photographic emulsion or acquired with a digital camera. Any modification of the original image must be made by the participant. Any original image entered as a composite Experimental* image must only contain additional images or work produced by the participant. The final image must be made on photographic paper by conventional means or digitally printed by ink jet or electronic image transfer on photographic paper.

4.     CERTIFICATION AND PERMISSIONS. By virtue of submitting an entry, the participant certifies the work as his or her own and permits Caritas Malta (the Organisers) to reproduce all or part of the entered material free of charge for publication or display in the media and any website related to this particular event.  Participants personally assume responsibility for any claim arising out of the publication or exhibition of their entries, as the Organiser assumes
no liability for any misuse of copyright and categorically disclaim any liability whatsoever.

5.     INTELLECTUAL RIGHTS. The copyright of any photographs entered in this competition remains with the entrants at all times. The Organiser has no rights to use the photographs submitted except in relation to this competition as detailed in Para. 4 above. If the Organiser requires the prints to be used for other purposes then the written permission of the entrant is required.

  1. NUMBER OF ENTRIES. Each participant may submit a maximum of 4 entries.

  2. SUBJECT MATTER. Subject matter is ‘Zero Poverty - Stop Poverty: Act Now’ (Ilqa’ l-Isfida:  Ġib il-Faqar fix-Xejn)

  3. ENTRY FEE:  There will be a fee of €5 covering all submissions by a participant. The fee will be payable on submission of entries as per Para. 9. 

  4. CLOSING DATE.  Entries must be handed in at the Malta Photographic Society, 137 Old Bakery Street, VALLETTA on the 23rd  September 2010 between 16.30hrs and 19.30hours.

  5.  PRINT SIZE. Prints measure: 30cms x 40cms edge to edge. Participants are to ensure that their prints fit into this format. Images that are smaller than the stated print size may have a border around them to make up the final print size required. Prints must be UNMOUNTED.  A digital copy of the printed images has to be presented on a CD, so that any winners or accepted prints may easily be reproduced in catalogues, magazines, Organisers’ website and presentation CD. The image file format should be JPEG and file resolution should be not more than 1024 (horizontal) x 768 (vertical) pixels at 300dpi. Files should be saved at maximum jpeg quality in SRGB colour space and file size should not be larger that 3 megabytes.

  6. ELIGIBILITY OF IMAGES. Images entered in any previous exhibitions organized by the Organiser, are not eligible.

  7. LABELING OF IMAGES. Title of Work, Name and Address of participant must appear at the back of each print in BLOCK LETTERS.  Entries must be numbered to agree with the entry form. 

  8. TROPHIES AND AWARDS. The Organiser will give Trophies for the overall winning entry and for the next highest placed entries in each of the monochrome and colour categories.  Certificates will be given for the overall winning entry and for each of the next three highest placed entries in each of the monochrome and colour categories.

  9. REJECTIONS. The Organisers reserve the right to reject any print or projected image prior to judging, giving a specific reason for such action.

15.  ORGANISERS LIABILITY. All possible care will be taken with the entries, but the Organisers do not accept liability for any loss or damage, however caused.  Participants are to withdraw their entries from the Society’s premises within six months of the closing of the the last exhibition.

  1. JUDGING. All works will be judged by a panel of local judges at the Malta Photographic Society’s premises. The panel will be made up of two judges from the Society and one from the Organiser.

  2. JUDGES DECISION. The Judges’ decision is final and may not be altered by the Organisers and no correspondence will be entered into.

  3. EXHIBITIONS. Images with a qualifying mark will be accepted for inclusion in any Exhibition/s the Organiser may wish to arrange and may be retained for a period of 6 months to allow the exhibition/s to be held in various locations in Malta and Gozo.

  4. POST JUDGING REJECTIONS. In the event of any selected or award-winning entry being later found to have violated any of these conditions, the Organisers reserve the right to take any action they deem fit, including the withdrawal of the prize/s awarded.  In such an event the winning position will be declared void.

  5. ACCEPTANCE OF CONDITIONS OF ENTRY. Participation in this Competition and Exhibition signifies acceptance of all the above conditions.

  6. DATA PROTECTION. Any personal details submitted by the entrant will be protected by the Organisers as required by the Data Protection Act.

*Experimental – Altered reality.  Any alteration of the original image whether produced in part or in whole by conventional means or by computer.
